Here is a case that occurs every single day in locations worldwide. Even if you plan the perfect flight, the weather can cause unforeseen problems that start small and turn into a complete meltdown that results in you sleeping in the airport or a hotel, getting on an early flight the next day, and delaying the start of a vacation, and possibly ruining an entire business trip.

However, there are ways to be prepared for this scenario and every point where your trip may be delayed.
Fly direct. Sure, it costs more, but it avoids much of the connection hassle.
Fly early, as most overnight storms are weakening and new storms form in the afternoon.
Have backup cash to book another airline. Not everyone can afford this, but if you can, it can be a trip saver. I’ve done this when flying Delta, waiting on a connecting flight, and booked Southwest and left right away. In this case, it was to attend my grandmother’s funeral, so it was worth it to me.
Be willing to book a rental car and drive either the rest of the way or just to another airport where you may be able to jump right on a flight. If you choose this option, confirm your flight won’t be delayed, and also drive away from the weather.
